Neuro Optometric Rehabilitation

Neuro Optometric Rehabilitation is the discipline responsible for rehabilitating the visual system after an Acquired Brain Injury (ABI). An ABI is an incident that disrupts the normal structure/function of the brain. One of theBrain photos most common forms of ABI is a concussion. It is estimated that at least 70% of our brain is dedicated to some form of visual processing. It should then be no surprise to learn that visual dysfunctions are common after an ABI.

The first part of managing patients with ABI is to perform a comprehensive vision evaluation to determine if there are any areas of visual processing that have been affected. A comprehensive evaluation should include measurement of convergence, focusing and eye-movement abilities with special attention to vestibular-ocular functioning along with standard ophthalmic examination techniques.

Many professionals should be involved in the care of the patient with an ABI. Optometrists with expertise in Neuro Optometric Rehabilitation are an integral part of that team. Click here to make an appointment with one of our doctors skilled in this area.
